The holiday season is in full swing and so is the ecommerce spending. This is a global trend and Indian ecommerce scenario is no exception to this. According to Nikhil Rungta, CBO of Yebhi, “……during festive season numbers go up by 30-40% for that period”.
With Christmas and year-end round the corner, here are some useful tricks and tips to leverage your holiday sales this year.
Decorate Your E-commerce Store Front
To set the right mood for the approaching holiday season, decorate your site as you do to your homes and your brick and mortar stores. You can do multiple things to liven up your e-store and spread the Christmas spirit:
- Change your site background theme with Christmas related graphics
- Use festive colors like red, white, golden, sky blue etc. to match up to the color scheme of the season
- You can also give your logo a festive twist, for example, add a Santa Claus hat with your logo or place a Christmas tree besides it
- Design and decorate your homepage banners and your festive offers with festive motifs like Santa Claus, fireworks, rain dears, ribbons etc.
Indian ecommerce sites like MynTrA, Shophunk, STYLETAG, Firstcry, Shopclues, Snapdeal, Bestylish etc. have taken up different ways to give their sites a fresh festive look. For example, STYLETAG, MynTrA, Bestylish and Snapdeal have used flash banners of different styles and sizes to decorate their sites and announce their festive offers, in fact Bestylish have also given their logo a festive twist by including a snowman, whereas ItsOurStudio has decorated their site with a Christmas themed graphic background.
To decorate your site you can use ready-made design templates, or else you can design it for once and save it for the future use. Decide a time span for which it will be up on the site. Remember this should not make your site too bulky to load slowly.
Offer Exclusive Discounts
Every online retailer has lucrative discount schemes but to increase your sales, lifestyle brands and businesses can benefit by creating a festive theme and offering an exclusive discount to upsell. Firstcry, Asia’s largest online baby and kids store, has come up with an exclusive campaign “Santa’s Toy Carnival”offering a discount from 15% to 50% on their collection of all 4600+ toys.
The complete concept of this campaign seems extremely enticing;starting from the name of the campaign to the themed banner design, clear and detailed information about the products on sale, the banners created for the promotional purpose, everything has been created with a proper theme alignment to get the maximum sales traction.
Run a Promotional Email Campaign
To boost your holiday sales, one of the best things you can do is to use email as a marketing tool. Email marketing has time and again proven to yield the highest return on investment of any form of marketing. You should create your email list at the first place always try to increase your email subscribers. As an ecommerce company you must have a good long list of email subscribers with you, use that to promote your festive offers through emails. It’s very much obvious, many in the list will be already your customers and it’s easier to get further business from them with lesser investment.
MynTrA has been among those early starters with this policy. They have created a nice promotional mail including the same banner image that is there on the site with the promotional offer. They are providing extra 30% off on all orders above a certain order price and have provided the promo code to avail the offer. They have also been able to create the much-needed sense of urgency by limiting the offer validity and making it a great way to upsell.
Give Cash Back Offer
You can simply give a cash back offer to your customers. Though this is a new trick but it still seems to have a good potential to boost the holiday sales. Hereby you can give your customers a particular percentage of cash back on each order. Credit the amount to the customer’s account as gift voucher and mention the time limit within which it can be redeemed. This in a way works as a gift voucher particularly for the same customer. Not only that, it will it also help you in increasing repeated purchases by old customers.
This is exactly what STYLETAG is doing for their Christmas sales campaign. They are offering 50% cash back on all orders till 25th of December and the cash back vouchers can be redeemed till 31st January 2014. It is expected to grow their holiday sales as well as return visits.
Create Gift Sets and Offer Free Gift Wrapping
Offer gift sets to your customers to help them with their selection process. Bundle products keeping similar items together to cross-sell.
Amazon India has done something similar for their customers this season. They have created gift bundles for their customers to buy this season. Not only this, they also are offering free gift-wrapping for specific orders.
Offer Single Day Delivery
To cater to the last minute shoppers introduce single day delivery for the occasion. You can ask for a nominal charge for the facility. Indian ecommerce giant Flipkart has introduced ‘In-a-day’ guaranteed delivery just a few days back, to get the complete traction of the last moment Indian metro city shoppers.
Though around the world, the Christmas rush starts early, but Indian e-retailers can take advantage of the festive spirit by staying aggressive right up until the New Year.
